Have you ever had ‘the blues’ at one point in your life? Love, work, and questions of fulfillment are at the core of our existence, yet we pay little attention to it in our ever fast paced and busy lives. SOMEPLACE ELSE offers a musical journey with bluesman Vance Kelly and his band from Chicago’s south side, criss-crossed with the effect that the band’s music has on the filmmaker’s personal outlook in life, drawing the audience into a resolutely modern experience of the blues musical genre, nowadays marginalized yet highly lively and relevant.

Pourtant nous y pretons peu d’attention dans un monde moderne qui ne cesse d’aller toujours plus vite. A travers le chasse-croise musical entre le bluesman Vance Kelly musicien du South-side de Chicago et les reflexions personnelles qu’engendrent l’ecoute de sa musique blues pour le realisateur, le spectateur s’immisce dans une experience visuellement moderne du sentiment blues, et eponyme de la forme de musique blues en portrait, forme marginalisee qui reste malgre tout resolument vivante et a garde toute sa force.

‘Someplace else’ evokes our everyday, the passage of time, work, love, and questions of self-fulfillment through the visually modern, and poetic cross-portrayal of two characters: Kai, the filmmaker, in his thirties, Asian-French expatriate in Chicago who has ‘the blues’ working ‘passionlessly’ for a global corporation, and Vance, the bluesman, in his fifties, guiding his happy bandmembers 365-days-a-year around the Chicago area clubs, inviting people from all walks of life to enjoy his funky ’soul-blues’. Mirroring the blues music at portrayal and its origins, SOMEPLACE ELSE gives a voice to everyday people through their candid interviews, uplifting stage performances and touching stories, keeping so-called expert opinions at bay, while providing an original approach to the documentary experience, by means of creative audiovisual storytelling and editing techniques.
